Last week, in Kherson was organized a round table with the participation of non-governmental organizations and various action groups that are engaged in providing legal and other assistance to the vulnerable social groups and individuals with the status of HIV / AIDS.
This theme is very relevant and is discussed not only at local level but also at National level. During the meeting, those present were President of Ukrainian human rights movement, "Dignity" Tatiana Bordunis and lawyer Eugene Kovalenko. Tatiana told about the activities of the organization and, in particular, the idea of a large-scale network of professional lawyers and attorneys all over Ukraine, which will deal with the provision of legal aid for vulnerable people.
According to Tatyana Bordunis, today in Ukraine is very acute problem of legal assistance for people with HIV / AIDS because of its lawyers organizations are often faced with various precedents in a situation where the law does not operate in favor of such people. Particularly acute, this time can be seen in the practice of legal aid for the people who were in prisons. More often than not, after the liberation, such people are without documents, without a home, family, and inheritance. More rarely, cases in which, knowing the HIV status of its employee, the employer uses all the prerequisites for the dismissal of labor law rights.
Ukrainian human rights organization "Dignity" has developed its own system of monitoring violations against members of vulnerable groups, in particular, people with HIV / AIDS. According to this monitoring, which takes place from April 2012, for 7 months there were 513 offenses. Most of them (330) was made in the health sector. Human rights activists have concluded that health workers, often breaking the law by making public the status of the patient. In some cases, human rights activists state the refusal of medical care or inadequate emergency assistance. Special attention should be discussion of legislative loopholes and contradictions that prevent community members and simply indifferent to show their social activity and help vulnerable people.
